Unravelling Fashion

A Woman’s Huipil from Oxchuc, Mexico

Social Anthropologist and Mexico specialist Dr Birgitta Huse invites us to take a closer look at the construction and adornment of a piece of wearable textile art. She guides us along the seams and joints of this extraordinary work.

“Fashion somehow reminds me of a jungle. Innumerable people and processes are involved. Unexpected twists turn up. Viewpoints and definitions vary. For me as a social anthropologist, the ways in which people in different cultures deal with fashion are of special interest. What is fashion considered to be in a certain environment? Which historical base does today’s fashion have in a given culture? How are existing traditions transformed creatively? Who are the protagonists of this never-ending process of change?

The creative 'weaving' of materials, techniques, skills and preferences into appealing textiles, garments and other objects is most fascinating to me. With my new series ‘UNRAVELLING FASHION’ I want to offer inspiring glimpses into fascinating fashion topics. I unravel the threads of spectacular fabrics and garments, their stunning designs, fantastic materials and fascinating modes of production. Another thread I follow is the imaginative transformation of fashion traditions. Diverse cultural perspectives play a crucial role in my shining a light onto fashion in different contexts. Let’s start with ‘A Woman’s Huipil from Oxchuc, Mexico.’ I invite you to have a closer look at this garment from my textile collection.”
